19th and 20th Century Pocket Watches. Anyone wishing to learn more about pocket watches, collectors or dealers, should find this authoritative title useful. Covering the period 1850-1940, the book covers in depth every type of pocket watch produced, explaining in clear, uncomplicated language precisely what to look out for and, equally, what to avoid. Unlike so many other books on horology, largely unobtainable or outrageously expensive "museum" examples are given a lower priority and attention is focused on affordable watches which readers are actually likely to come across in auctions, sales or antique shops. Illustrated throughout with hundreds of photographs, the authors provide not just portraits of watches but also numerous examples of their internal workings or movements. Nothing escapes their attention, from alarm to late verge, and the instruction and advice should commend itself to prospective purchasers and cataloguers everywhere. View this item in the USA |

The book of Painted Dial Clocks includes a detailed list of every recorded dialmaker and explains the development of dial and case styles and regional trends. It should make interesting reading for the owner of any painted dial clock, as well as collectors and dealers. This is a new edition of an earlier book "White Dial Clocks", and was written to take account of the latest research findings containing additional b/w illustrations and new colour material. The painted dial clock is important in Britain, in the sense that it is more readily available than many other types of clock. This greater availability often means they fall into a lower price category and so are more affordable for the potential buyer. For American collectors, these clocks assume an even greater importance. Of those clocks actually made in North America few were made with brass dials, and those with painted dials were often made using dials imported from Britain by the clockmakers. The same also applies to clocks made in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. For all these countries, therefore, a knowledge of British painted dial clockmaking is useful. View this item in the USA |
