Antique Clocks and Pocket Watches.
Nowadays, with the advent and accuracy of quartz, antique clocks are avidly collected, more for their tremendous decorative appeal than for the accuracy of their timekeeping. That's not to say antique clocks weren't accurate, they were marvels of technical ingenuity and fine examples of the skill and craftsmanship, not only of the clock maker, but the cabinet maker, dial painter, brass caster, gear cutter, polisher and engraver.
The options for collecting antique clocks are enormous. From fine mahogany longcase clocks, to complex skeleton clocks, bracket clocks, carriage clocks, table and mantel clocks, wall clocks, right back to the early examples known as lanterns.
It must be remembered that clocks are like cars, they need a certain amount of regular maintenance, and the occasional major overhaul, both of which can be rather expensive. However, there is little that can replace the calming effect of a grand old clock ticking on the mantelpiece.
