Antique Dolls and Doll Houses
Dolls have been an important part of our lives for thousands of years. Dolls have been found in the ruins of many ancient civilizations including the Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek and Roman eras.
Dolls have gradually taken on more and more lifelike appearances and texture, as design and techniques have improved, but it is clear that even the earliest dolls were meant to be played with and were a source of education and endearment. Dolls have been made of many materials during their development, firstly wood or clay, then composition (pulped wood/paper), wax, porcelain (china and bisque).
Dolls were first represented as adults, but in the mid 1800's the French "Bebe" came along which looked like a young girl. This changed the way dolls were portrayed from then on, and this trend has continued to this day.
