Antique Collector - Antique Sculpture and Bronze

Bronze sculpture and the art of being outstanding on a plinth.
From ladies in flowing dresses, to fishermen and hunters, to the energetic symbols of speed epitomized by the Art Deco sculptors, the bronze is an enduring embodiment of human energy and strength.

The early introduction of small bronzes, usually figurines, made decorative sculpture more affordable to the masses and found prominence in the home. Those that capture the beauty and spirit of human form and feeling seem to have a life of their own.

The "white" and much lighter metal, spelter, was widely promoted as a less expensive alternative to bronze, and with a bronze coating can often seem just as good as the real thing. Many spelter figurines were weighted to give the impression of bronze quality, however, they were often of inferior detail. They are still very collectable today.

This study examines traditions in late-Antique sculpture, including conservation, modernisation and production. In the Roman world, marble sculpture could be reworked for several reasons. The most common form of reworking, generally easy to recognise, could be termed functional - a portrait could be re-cut to represent another person, or a complete sculpture modified for a new setting.

An investigation into the lives of our prehistoric ancestors. One of the most important archaeological discoveries of recent times was the uncovering in 1998 at low tide of the so-called Seahenge on the north coast of Norfolk. A circle of wooden planks set vertically in the sand, with a large inverted tree-trunk in the middle, likened to a ghostly "hand reaching up from the underworld", has now been dated to around 2020 BC.

Dickinson has written an up-to-date introduction to the prehistoric civilizations of Greece. The Aegean Bronze Age, the period from roughly 3000 to 1000 BC, saw the rise and fall of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations. The cultural history of the region emerges through thematic chapters that treat settlement, economy, crafts, exchange, foreign contact, religion and burial customs.

To research this book, James Mackay combed every possible source. The result is this classic work of reference listing 8,430 artists who contributed to the art of casting in bronze from the 18th century to 1960. It has, without doubt, become the standard reference on a fascinating subject. This comprehensive book will enable collectors, dealers and students to identify bronzes bearing a signature.

The group of 100 French bronzes in the Wallace Collection is considered one of the finest such collections in the world. They were acquired by three men, the third and the fourth marquesses of Hartford and the latter's son, Sir Richard Wallace, during the first 75 years of the 19th century. They range in date from 1570 to 1840, but are richest in the period around 1700, the "golden age" of the French bronze.
